Aight, lemme add my two cents here. M.I.A. has been merging cultures and ethnicities since day one and almost nobody complained about that. Today we're discussing it because of the growing tumblr's mentality where everything is cultural appropriation and separatist ideologies became a battle cry. It's insane that we're even wondering if shooting a video outside of one's country is right or not. She probably noticed this man on the internet, loved his dancing and contacted him. What the hell is wrong with that? But the real question is what the hell is wrong with you? If she filmed a Swedish dude frying potatoes nobody would have said anything, because we all know that cultural appropriation becomes a thing only when it concerns non-white cultures/countries (I'm not the type of person who uses non-white or poc but well that's the internet).
Indeed:
Replies to this tweet show what I stated above that's the ambiguity towards cultural appropriation.
That retweet is the tragic part of the whole thing; I don't expect anything good coming from Azealia Banks. But one minute M.I.A. is defending artistic freedom, and one minute later she retweets this mess which is implicitly saying "it's cultural appropriation only if white people do it".
Has any of these angry typists ever thought that it all depends on the one's intent? If we're using somebody's else dance, culture etc in a exploitive way or not?
Please, I'm not even going to explain this tweet above, just don't pretend you don't get what she means.
