Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam or better known by her stage name M.I.A. is a leading woman within the music industry, having the titles of singer, songwriter and director under her belt as well as countless awards and chart topping singles. However, some people don’t know the artist due to her music, but her strong political views and provocative manner. Combining rhythm’s of many global cultures with revolution provoking lyrics, M.I.A is loved by WILDABOUT. Here’s why…
Over the past 8 years M.I.A’s fashion sense has been as loud as her music, always being ahead of the trends and embracing so many of her associated cultures into outfits that we envy. She also released a clothing line through her website filled with digitized tribal prints and brightly colored lamé. Since then she’s caught the attention of lots of designers. She’s DJed and modelled for Marc Jacobs whilst in addition serving as a muse for Donatella Versace.
M.I.A embraced her background of being originally London born with parents of Sri-Lankan Tamil descent. Living back in Sri- Lanka, her father led a Tamil independence movement and was always on the move avoiding the Sri Lankan government, finally moving to back to London in 1986. She graduated from Central St Martins College and then worked as a filmmaker, designer and visual artist. Actor Jude Law was actually one of the first fans and art buyers.
Our girl isn’t afraid to speak her mind. After several rather public clashes with her label, Interscope, which then led to M.I.A at one point threatening to leak her last album. Most famously this year there was a lot in the press about her association with cultural appropriation, and who could forget the whole 2012 Super Bowl fiasco?
A rare gem in the lights of fame is M.I.A, and here at WILDABOUT we pray for an endless supply of art from one of our all time favourites, Maya.
